A stonemason is not exactly the same as a builder, although their work is closely related. A builder usually manages or constructs entire buildings, coordinating different trades such as carpentry, plumbing, and roofing. A stonemason, on the other hand, specializes specifically in working with stone. They may be hired by a builder or contractor to complete the stone parts of a project, such as walls, facades, fireplaces, or decorative stone features. While some stonemasons may also work as builders or run construction businesses, the two roles are different in focus and training.
